A Good Night Sleep

A Good Night’s Sleep and SSB Interview

A Good Night’s Sleep and SSB Interview. Hello aspirants. I could understand the thought in most of your minds while you read the topic – “What on earth is an article on sleep doing on a site of SSB tips?” or just “Is SSB and sleep really related?” Long answers short-Yes, sleep is majorly related to cracking SSB, I’ll get on to it later as you read on.
While I listen to many of my friends during my exam day that they’ve been studying the whole night, I tend to become nervous for myself. But, after the exam, the phrases which are common to my ears from the same tongues are “Yaar itna padha tha, sab bhool gaya”, “Kuch aisa diagram tha, yaad nahi aa raha tha. Itna practise kiya tha yaar, sab brainwash ho gaya exam time pe”. But my exam seem to go perfect while I didn’t even woke the whole night studying.

To explain it, I want you to imagine this situation: It’s 4 a.m. in the morning and the big test of NDA/CDSE/AFCAT is in 6 hours followed by the typewriting test you’ve been practising for long, in your school/college. You have been preparing for days and still don’t feel ready. You have to practise the typing a little more and learn/revise those formulae/methods. What’d you do? Take another cup of coffee and get back to it, cramming and practising? Pray to god to time travel you in the past, again? Or pray for the test to be postponed so that you could manage the other by the morning?a good sleep
Hoping that everyone of you have had experienced this situation atleast once in life (if you hadn’t, then you inspire me), but believe it or not, you might be better off closing everything and get into that warm, comfortable and cozy blanket to have that much called-for sleep for the rest of the night in that soft-coushiony bed.
Sleep occupies nearly a third of our lives, but many of us give surpirisingly little attention and care to it. This neglect is often the result of a major misunderstading: sleeping isn’t a lost time or a way to rest when every work is done; instead, it’s a critical process during which your body regulates the functions of your respiration and circulating blood for growth and immune response. Well, it’s great, but you can worry about it after your test, right? Well, not so fast. It turns out that sleep is also crucial for your brain with a fifth of your body’s blood being channelled to it. And what’s going on while you are asleep is intensely active period of restructuring. That’s crucial for how our memory works.
The hippocampus (innermost memory center for long term memory retention) of your brain is crucial for long term memory retention of declarative memory (learning formulae) rather than procedural memory (practising by repetition like typing). The sleep is composed of four stages: Stage 1, Stage 2, Slow wave sleep (SWS), Rapid eye movement (REM)-The deepest of all. Different stages of sleep helps consolidate different types of memories. During the non-REM cycle or the slow wave sleep, the declarative memory (learning of formulae) is stored temporarily in the interior part of the hippocampus, which, with a good night’s sleep helps in permanent retention in the cortex (outer part of memory). The REM on the other hand, focuses on the procedural memory.
Stage 1 and 2 are generally of 20-30 mins in which you didn’t even felt like you were asleep, but it’ll give you a good boost for the rest of the day, hence called the POWER NAP. Slow wave sleep is of about 1 hour which helps your declarative memory and you feel dizzy when you wake. The Rapid Eye Movement is of 1½ hour in which all the bodily functions and procedural memory gets healed.
So based on studies, going to sleep three hours after memorizing your formulae and one hour after practising your typing will be the most ideal time of all.
Also, you will not need an alarm to wake up if you sleep by repeating the time by which you want to wake, like, to wake up at 5 in the morning, keep on repeating ‘I’ll have to wake up in the morning by 5’ while you lie on your bed which will reset your internal clock. This is the magic of your subconciuos mind. (Try it tonight!). I’ll not go in much detail of this.
This, indeed helps in the long term. Research also shows that by just picturing your long term goals while sleeping, you are 76% more likely to achieve that goal than by the others. If you want to fly a Su-30 MKI, picture yourself in the cockpit of the plane; if you can’t, just repeat ‘I will fly a Su-30 one day’ or ‘I’ll clear the SSB one day’.
Lemme make one thing clear here; being regular, consistent and determined throughout is the key to success. No great stories and success are achieved overnight.
This article particularly focuses on the amount of sleep required by the candidates. For general, a good night’s sleep consists of atleast four to five REMs (1½ X 4 =6). Hence, a minimum of six hours will do it and a maximum of 7½ to 8 hours. Also, as stated earlier, it may not be appreciable in short term, but will make a lot of difference in long term.
So you can see now that skipping on your sleep not only harms your long term health but actually makes it less likely that it retains all the formulae and practise from the previous night. In a nutshell, a good night’s sleep will help you wake up with a new and improved brain, ready to face new challenges. So go ahead and crack those SSBs.

DO I HAVE THE ABILITY TO BECOME OFFICER

Do I Have The Ability To Become Officer At Defence Forces?

“Ability is what you are capable of doing, motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” ~~ Lou Holtz
Joining defence forces is the new trend among the youth now a day. Is it because of the increased salary or because of the perk and privileges that one receive or the respect or the passion to work for the motherland. Different personalities might have varying reasons but the input that are forces are getting is commendable. Anyway I am sure that no wrong element would reach because of the stringent selection procedures. Anyways when a person is thriving for success and knows where he needs to reach and how to reach then only can he achieve it. Nothing different for the ?Indian defence forces.

So before you make a decision of any consequence, make sure you are:
  • in your right and strongest mind
  • feeling positive rather than sad
  • healthy not ill
  • full rather than empty
  • active rather than tired
Motivation is highly needed as it’s rightly said that even if you have the ability but no motivation you will feel the lack of internal energy that pushes you to achieve. Failures might be part of your life, but they are necessary to keep life moving ahead else life would be monotonous with no fear. People would stop working hard if failure were not there. It’s the fear of failure only that keeps you motivated to achieve some stand in life.Become Officer At Defence Forces
Attitude of looking at situations and reacting to them also determines how well you do and achieve things. People look dreams and do not work accordingly. They think everything is easy to achieve, but they are far from reality. In course of time when they lose then only they realise how much work was needed and how much they did. Every individual has the capability to get selected at SSB but the person needs a right set of guidance and the motivation to reach the pinnacle. One need to identify the personality which is pure and real and not the show off that he or she does in society. Defence force is for the real hero’s and only such people get selected there.
Life is a battle and you should fight it bravely. Once you inculcate these qualities, I think no one can stop you clearing the SSB as it is the only exam which judges you on various parameters for five days and then selects you. It’s the beauty of this exam that wrong is caught and punished. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for OLQ’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at jayendrapsingh@gmail.com or add me on Fb and drop in a message. The exam is so pure that only the deserving candidates cross it. You are also the one, but believe in your efforts and keep trying. Start with introspection and know your real self and then SSB would just be a five day self-realisation rather than a exam for the aspirants. Keep going!!!

10 MILITARY HABITS THAT MAKE SOLDIERS AWESOME

10 Military Habits That Make Soldiers Awesome

“No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck.” – Erich Maria Remarque
Serving in the military is a life changing experience. We can easily spot a military service member when we see one. Their habits, that they come to inculcate upon their commission in the military, are so distinct and while they may try to remain subtle in a crowd, their habits and body language make it easy for us to tell them apart from the crowd.
Here are some of the common military habits that make the soldiers awesome.
    1. They are extremely polite. You can easily pick out service members by their over usage of “sir” and “ma’am.” The soldiers never discriminate among people when it comes to politeness. A shopkeeper would get the same amount of respect that a Colonel would. All thanks to the military discipline.
    2. Their haircut!
I have never come across any defence personnel how doesn’t have a smart haircut. The crew cut is the signature haircut that most of the service members have. Years will pass by and the soldiers will never get tired of sporting their smartly- cut hair.
    3. Sunglasses!
Wearing sunglasses has become like an unwritten norm for the military personnel. The military personnel wear sunglasses even when its’ not sunny outside! So much for a habit!
    4. They walk fast.
Military personnel walk with a purpose, as if their trip to the grocery store is actually a Ministry of Defence briefing! Their walk defines another parameter of confidence.OTA Dinner
    5. The power stance.
Habits are hard to kick. The posture of the military personnel literally makes you feel that they own the place!
    6. Use of jargons
The military personnel have the habit of using jargons ( example- Roger, etc.) in their normal daily way of speaking. If a non-defence background individual is to hear them speak, I’m pretty sure they would be awestruck!
    7. They have the tendency to scan the crowd and are very observant. If you are in a room full of people and you spot someone who’s been scanning and observing the crowd, you are most probably looking at a soldier. They can easily sense if something is suspicious and act accordingly.
    8. They can sleep anywhere.
Military personnel can sleep probably anywhere, in any weather, on anything. They also come out of it rapidly and coherently and it’s no big deal for them.
    9. They are unbelievably punctual. So they have this really unbelievable punctuality. 1800 hours, for them, can become 1755 hours but not 1805 hours. They will always be on time, irrespective of the event, etc.
    10. Their determination and courage is unmatched.
The military personnel have so much determination for whatever they do. No task is big or small; they put their 100% in everything that they do. Their courage is something that inspires other people to be like them.

ARTICLE- WHY TO JOIN THE ARMED FORCE

Why To Join The Armed Forces: The Overriding Factor

Ever wondered? Why don’t professions like engineering, medical, law, arts, media, management etc excite you enough? When rest of the world is vying for cushy and comfy jobs what has happened to you? Well this might be the question which people of your surroundings may be asking you. Don’t worry you are not alone, there many of us who are bitten by the same bug, the bug of serving the country in uniform. Well, we tried to go deep into the dominant factor which drives you to be a part of the forces, the results of which are illustrated in the article below.
    • What would you call it when people leave IITs to enter the battleground?
    • Why do some women don’t prefer to get married in a well off family and lead a comfortable life?
    • How come some brooding youngsters prefer joining NDA rather than reveling in their parent’s money?
    • Why do some people just cannot sit back and accept their defeat?

Why To Join The Armed Forces

    1. NATION AND NOTHING ELSE : Yes, Bhagat Singh still lives in the heart of many and people in the Why To Join The Armed Forcesarmed forces just testify this fact every day. Words like “,Desh Hi Meri Mehbooba Hai” seem true on these individuals. It is the love and reverence for the national flag which drives these people to join the forces. It is because of these people that Indian Armed Forces have a special place in hearts of fellow countrymen.
    1. THE CHARM OF THE UNIFORM : Yes, it is indeed true that uniform transforms your personality left right and centre. There is a saying that “Those in uniform are real men, others are just plain males”. Nothing gives you greater satisfaction than seeing yourself in the mirror in the uniform.
    1. PRIDE AND HONOUR : When your father says “, you see, my son is in the Indian Army” a certain pomp reflects in his voice, It is all because of your achievements. When your mom says “, my girl is a Flying Officer in the Air force” she relives her youth along with you. When just about anybody asserts “, look there. The person in the resplendent white uniform is a Naval Officer” a sense of self pride overwhelms you. Well, this is the effect which no other career option will produce, no matter how much ever you earn; there are some things that money can never buy.
    1. REMUNERATION AND JOB SECURITY : Now needless to say, given the volatile nature of markets these days, even the CEO of a million dollar company is under the constant threat of losing his job. A Gentleman once said”, when you join the armed forces, you get married to the armed forces.” The armed forces treat its men with utmost delicacy. Once you are in the forces there is no looking back. You can be rest assured of your job and pay scale.
    1. OTHER FACTORS : Things like free medical, proper care of dependents, sports & adventure activities are just like icing on the cake. You also get adequate allowances, leaves and retirement benefits. Apart from these you can go abroad on various missions. You can even enhance your knowledge and do post graduation from institutes such as the IITs. The wet canteen facility is like manna from heaven for people having an appetite for liquor. And there is a boatload of secondary benefits too!

10 WAYS TO MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

10 Ways To Maintain A Positive Attitude

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you.” –  Walt Whitman.
We are all unique in our own ways. No two people can have the same perception about a thing. For example, two people see the same cloud, but one of them perceives the cloud’s shape to be of a horse while the other perceives it to be a rabbit. How we perceive things define our attitudes towards it. What is attitude? Our attitude is the disposition to respond favourably or unfavourably to a person, event or an object. Why are we talking about positive attitude? Any organization, be it the Armed Forces or any MNC, would without a doubt value an officer or an employee who has a positive attitude. A person with a negative attitude isn’t really liked by people and in the workplace such people end up being a liability. We acquire attitudes by our interactions with the environment, our experiences and our education.
In today’s time, life can throw some really challenging situations at us and it becomes stressful most of the times. During such situations, it can become very difficult to maintain a positive attitude. Nonetheless, ,
    Here are some ways:
    1. Don’t search for happiness. Create it.Understand that happiness is a state of mind. Ironically our search for happiness itself can become very stressful sometimes. Don’t just sit and wait for happiness, go out and make it happen for yourself. Create a happy environment for yourself from this moment onwards. In doing so your attitude towards things becomes positive and life becomes a happy journey instead of being a challenge.
    2. Count your blessings
Sit down alone and literally count your blessings and be thankful for them. We have a tendency to overlook what went right and to focus on what went wrong. Be thankful for whatever you have. Being content with one’s life helps in developing a positive attitude.
    3. Focus on the good. Not the bad
Shift your focus from the things that make you sad or make you anxious and think about things that comfort you. It helps in reducing the stress levels. It’s difficult to have a “glass half full” attitude in cumbersome situations but you’d rather have the glass half full than the glass half empty right?
    4. Surround yourself with positive peopleWe become easily influenced by the people with whom we interact day in and day out. If you are surrounded by people who have negative attitudes about everything it’s going to rub off on you sooner or later. Before you know it, you’ll become like them. Similarly, when you are surrounded by people who have a positive outlook towards life, you will also adopt the same perspective.
    5. Exercise
Exercising not only helps the body but also the mind. It helps to lower the stress levels and relieve anxiety. Exercise also helps in preventing cognitive decline and sharpens your memory.10 Ways To Maintain A Positive Attitude
    6. Watch what you are eating
what you eat can have a major impact on your mood and outlook towards life. Eat food that has enough Omega-3 Fatty Acids. These may help protect against depression. It’s important to get enough vitamin D as well as it can help increase the serotonin levels in the brain. A diet which is rich in vegetables, fruits and lean protein helps in feeling better mentally and physically.
    7. Decide and prioritize.
Discover your purpose in life. Try visualising your future: where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 10 years? What goals do you have and how to achieve them? Prioritize your life and determine what is important for you. Prioritizing everything can help you achieve a better balance in your life. This aids in avoiding confusion and since you know what you want in life, you’ll be more likely to have a positive approach towards achieving your goals. In the long run, it’ll be beneficial for you.
    8. Talk to yourself.
You are your biggest critic. Nobody knows you better than yourself. So talk to yourself. Give pep and motivational talks to yourself. Motivate yourself rather than getting motivated by others. For example, someone might listen to a motivational song first thing in the morning or stand in front of the mirror and say a few positive words to themselves. Whatever works right?
    9. Live in the present.
Don’t get bogged down by thinking of the past and don’t get anxious by thinking about the future. Just live in the moment and seize it. Enjoy the moment that you’re in. That’s the only things in your control. You can’t change the past. Your future pretty much depends on your present. So focus on it, works towards a better future.
    10. Accept challenges. Don’t crib.
Consider two people, one who cribs all the time about dealing with challenges and one who accepts them and works towards solving them. In the long run, which one is likely to develop a positive attitude towards life and challenges? The second person. If you accept challenges with optimism and solve the problem, your self-efficacy (the belief that you can do a particular task) will increase which will ultimately result in a positive attitude towards yourself and others.Try adopting these ways in your daily life and remember that attitude changes everything!
